The department has been responsible for 185 research projects from Shenzhen,National Natural Science Fund, Ministry of Science and Technology,Ministry of Education and Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Fund with the allocated fund of 206,386,000 yuan in total. In recent years, our teaching staff members’ voices have been increasingly heard in international biological field by publishing more than 299 excellent papers with SUSTech as the first author or corresponding author in 179 of those in journals including Nature Communications,Cell Research, Cell Stem Cell,Circulation Research .news3.png

  • Systems Biology

    Systems biology is an interdisciplinary subject that has emerged in recent years with the rapid development of multi-omics technologies, especially genomics, and the increasing use of computer science and mathematics in solving biological problems. The major goal is to understand the gene expression regulation in higher animals and its evolutionary mechanism and illustrate the genetic basis of complex diseases, and to develop new methods to obtain, analyze and manage massive genomics, proteomics and metabolomics data and construct multi-process regulatory networks of gene expression, mathematical models of complex disease and databases for drug development.

    Supported by SUSTech-PKU Institute of Plant and Food Science, the department has eighteen exceptional scientists in the fields of plant science and its interdisciplinary. This direction includes a significant competitive advantage over the platform for dynamic analysis of phenotype, cell images, small molecular-screening and greenhouse planting, supporting the creativity and exploration for cell signal transductions, gene expression regulations, protein structures and molecular mechanisms of cell differentiation and development, emphasizing the fundamental and applied research work and establishing theoretical and technological frame works for molecular breeding and bioengineering.

Since 2012, Department of Biology has published a total of 299 academic papers in total. In 2014, associate professor Wei Zhiyi from the Department of Biology published papers named Crystal structure of the RNA-guided immune surveillance Cascade complex in Escherichia coli in Nature Research, which was the first SUSTech paper to be published in the prestigous journal. Professors Guo Xugang, Wang Guanyu, Huang Wei and Chen Yifan also published scholarly monograph respectively and fulfilled the zero breakthrough of academic monographs of SUSTech.1582781195434061 (1).png

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Cellular Microenvironment and Disease Research

the major research directions of Guangdong Provincial Cellular Microenvironment and Disease Research Key Laboratory will be malignant tumor and other major diseases, such as osteoarthritis. It aims to expound the molecular mechanisms of these diseases and thus, provide theoretical basis for the diagnosis, R&D of drugs and clinical targeted therapy of relevant diseases. Backed by Shenzhen Municipality and Guangdong Province, the laboratory will organize and establish a world-class cellular microenvironment and disease R&D platform, and build a leading talent cultivation base with international influence for relevant fields. By doing so, it will provide technological support and an innovation Research Base for Guangdong's bio-pharmaceutical and massive health industries, and satisfy the needs of the state's major development strategies and regional economic and social development.

Life Science Imaging Center

In 2016, Life Science Imaging Center was established by Life Science Research Center, Department of Biology and Nikon Instruments of Shanghai. As the first imaging center of Nikon in south China, it has advantages of Nikon and SUSTech and will be an advanced micro-imaging platform available to the researchers of SUSTech and those of its partner universities. The center is equipped with instruments including dissecting microscope, upright microscope,inverted microscope, fluorescent microscope, laser scanning confocal microscope,super-resolution microscopy of SIM/STORM, micro-injection system and a live cell research station with business and technical support from Nikon Instruments.
