research area

  • Systems Biology

The Department of Systems Biology is a dynamic and interdisciplinary research unit dedicated to advancing our understanding of complicated biological systems. We apply multidisciplinary technologies to integrate biological big data, such as genomics and epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and interactomics, to study biological systems. We aim to construct integrated models to explain complex processes in life and apply those models to addressing challenges in human health.

  • Plant Biology

The Department of Biology will encompass multiple research directions, such as plant biology, ecology and evolution, cell homeostasis, food science and agriculture. Facilitated by several well-established research platforms such as SUSTech-Peking University Institute of Plant and Food Sciences and the Key Laboratory of Molecular Design for Plant Cell Factory of Guangdong Higher Education Institutes, the Department will endeavor to make new growth of biological disciplines and cultivate interdisciplinary directions, and to pursue in-depth research on the nature and laws behind life.

  • Neuroscience

Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary research field aspired to understand how animal brains include our own development, function and age, what governs brain physiological functions such as memory, behavior and cognition and why brains succumb to numerous diseases and disorders.

  • Immunology and Microbiology

Immunology and Microbiology are foundational disciplines in life sciences that are thriving in the new era of interdisciplinary crosstalk. Research in these areas provides a theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of major human diseases, essential for safeguarding public health and national security amidst ever-growing globalization.

  • Chemical Biology

Chemical biology is an emerging interdisciplinary field where life processes are studied with chemical means. Its core research interest is to use chemical and other methods to intervene and detect endogenous biological processes, as well as to develop new molecules and chemical tools to study life phenomena and develop new drugs.

scientific achievements

Since 2012, Department of Biology has published a total of 299 academic papers in total. In 2014, associate professor Wei Zhiyi from the Department of Biology published papers named Crystal structure of the RNA-guided immune surveillance Cascade complex in Escherichia coli in Nature Research, which was the first SUSTech paper to be published in the prestigous journal. Professors Guo Xugang, Wang Guanyu, Huang Wei and Chen Yifan also published scholarly monograph respectively and fulfilled the zero breakthrough of academic monographs of SUSTech.1582781195434061 (1).png

Basic Science Center for mechanism and intervention of human neurological disorders program

As one of the research hotspots in the world, Protein condensates (membraneless organelles) formed by liquid-liquid-phase separation (LLPS) are important functional units in executing basic cellular functions including the nervous system. Precise regulation of the phase state of proteins is involved in physiological and pathological conditions. (Dys)regulation of protein LLPS can lead to phase transition which may promote abnormal protein aggregation, a common pathological hallmark of diverse neurological disorders. The program aims for critical conceptual advances and new insights into the pathological mechanisms of different neurological disorders, as well as new strategies and drug candidates targeting phase separated proteins for therapeutics.

Shenzhen Key Laboratory Of Gene Regulation And Systems Biology

“Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Gene Regulation and Systems Biology” was established in April 2021 by the School of Life Sciences of Southern University of Science and Technology and is subsidized by Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Committee. Our Key Laboratory currently contains 14 independent research groups, constituting a team of more than 80 members, including researchers, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, visiting scholars, etc. Professor Wei Chen of the School of Life Sciences is the first Director of the Laboratory. Our Laboratory is committed to developing, utilizing, and integrating state-of-the-art system biology, genomics, single-cell omics, and other technologies for multi-level and multi-dimensional analysis of gene regulation mechanisms. We aim at major scientific issues of life and health, such as stem cell developmental and regenerative medicine, malignant tumorigenesis and metastasis, nervous system diseases, infectious diseases, and new drug discovery, and exploring novel and accurate diagnoses and treatments for the above complex diseases.
