On December 4, the School of Life Sciences’ founding ceremony was held in the SUSTech University Center. Deputy Director of Science and Technology Innovation Committee of Shenzhen Municipality Xuan QIU, Deputy director of Shenzhen Education Bureau Yang YU, SUSTech Council Chairperson Yurong GUO, President Qikun XUE, Former President Shiyi CHEN attended the meeting. They were joined by academicians, over 400 guests, students, and faculty.
Yang YU said that the School of Life Sciences came into being at the right time. Director YU expressed his hope that the School would seize the important strategic opportunities, develop advanced disciplines, cultivate top-notch innovative life science talents for human health, and become an excellent life sciences school in the Greater Bay Area.
Academician of CAS Zihe RAO congratulated the establishment of the School. He believed that the School could design a set of innovative mechanism which is in line with China’s national conditions, the construction concept of the Greater Bay Area and the characteristics of SUSTech, to enhance the research and teaching of the School to the international level.
University Council Vice Chairperson Fengliang LI read out the establishment of the School and the appointment of its Dean. Then senior leaders unveiled the School of Life Sciences.
Dean of the School of Life Sciences Mingjie ZHANG also expressed his expectation for the School. He said that an inclusive study environment with great freedom, support, and cooperation would be created to cultivate more talents in the field of life sciences for Shenzhen city and the country.
President Qikun XUE expressed his great expectation to the School. He said that our nation had attached increasing attention to life sciences. As science and technology have played a significant role in the battle against the epidemic, strengthening basic research in life science and making breakthroughs in key core technologies of medical and health have risen to the height of national strategy. President XUE hoped that the School could cooperate with other schools of SUSTech for interdisciplinary study and make more breakthroughs in life sciences.
