PIEZO1 and PIEZO2 have been identified by Patapoutian and colleagues as bona fide mechanoreceptors, which mediate the sense of gentle touch, proprioception, blood pressure, tactile pain, and regulate the development and function of various tissues such as the cardiovascular, bone and brain. For the landmark discovery of PIEZO2 as touch receptor in mammals, Dr. Ardem Patapoutan has shared the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Dr. David Julius, who discovered the first temperature receptor TRPV1. In this talk, I will introduce the history of the PIEZO discovery and our current understanding of PIEZOs with a particular focus on their unique structural designs and physical principles that might enable them to serve as versatile and professional mechanosensors.



肖百龙博士,清华大学药学院长聘教授、副院长;兼任清华-北大生命科学联合中心、清华大学IDG/麦戈文脑科学研究院、膜生物学国家重点实验室、北京生物结构前沿中心研究员;科技创新2030-“脑科学与类脑研究”重大项目首席科学家;国家杰出青年科学基金、科学探索奖、谈家桢生命科学创新奖、药明康德生命化学研究奖获得者。其于2001年从中山大学获得理学学士学位;2001-2006年在加拿大University of Calgary获得博士学位;2007-2012年在美国The Scripps Research Institute从事神经科学博士后研究,导师为2021年诺贝尔生理学或医学奖得主Ardem Patapoutian教授。近10年来其课题组致力于探究哺乳动物包括人类自身如何感知机械力这一生命科学本质问题,聚焦于解答机械力受体PIEZO如何将机械力刺激转化为电化学信号这一关键科学问题,在Nature(2012,2015,2018,2019,2022)、Neuron(2016,2020,2022)等期刊发表系列研究论文,部分研究成果被2021年诺贝尔生理学或医学奖委员会所引用,被收录进经典神经生物学教科书,以及入选国家十三五科技创新成就展。
